European Day of Languages Celebration

Every year, we promote the learning of foreign languages in our school I.E.S Caura. That's why we have organised a variety of activities in order to celebrate the European Day of Languages, which is on 26th September.

Among the different projects, we can find:

- My favourite word in different languages.

-Crazy translations. (Our language assistants found this quite interesting, and they are learning quite a few of our Spanish expressions).

- Words impossible to translate.

- Borrowings from other European languages.

- Tongue Twisters.

-Words that Gibraltarians use in Spanish that come from English.

Students who participated making posters will receive extra points in their evaluations!

Thanks to the English and Spanish Language for their participation.

What a heat, my weapon" (¡Qué calor, miarma!)

- Palabras intraducibles.

Our new language assistants: welcome, Carlos and Niobe!

IES Caura is proud to announce that we have been joined by Carlos Gonzalez and Niobe Melendy, our new language assistants, both from the USA! Here is a little paragraph they have written about themselves:

Hello Students! My name is Carlos Gonzalez. I was born in Mexico but raised in Texas. Texas is a fascinating state with rich history and culture. I attended Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. I love to play guitar and used to perform as a mariachi. I studied classical guitar performance with a minor in Spanish. I am interested in studying flamenco guitar while I am in Spain and look forward to learning as much as I can about Spanish culture.

Thanks,
Carlos Gonzalez

My name is Niobe, and I’m from San Francisco, California. I graduated this past June with my bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics. I am learning to play the violin and I write poetry. I’m not a very good violinist yet, but I practice as often as I can. I also received my black belt this past May in Kung Jung Mu Sul, which is a style of Tae Kwon Do. I am currently looking for a wooden sword (or a long stick) so I can practice while I’m here is Spain. I plan to go home to the US in June and attend graduate school for the following 2 years.

BOOK DAY DOOR DECORATING CONTEST

On 23rd April, we celebrate BOOK DAY and this year our school has organized a door decorating contest. The decorations were inspired by the different books that are being studied and analysed in the different levels. There were amazing creations like the ones you can see below. Extra points were given to those decorations made from recycled materials.

Trinity Test Trialling 2022

On the 14th and 16th of February, some students at our school took Trinity Test Trials to prepare for the real exam, which will be held next 4th of May and which will enable them to obtain Trinity ISE certificates at various levels. This year, the tests were conducted online and our ICT Coordinator, Ana Esquiva,  helped us prepare all the equipments and watched that everything was developed without any sort of technical incidents.

St. Valentine's at IES Caura

Last 14th of February, to celebrate St. Valentine's Day our students contributed to create Juliet's Wall in an attempt to imitate the walls of Juliet's home in Verona, where lovers stick their love messages beneath Juliet's balcony. In the same way, our students and some teachers stuck their love messages, which could be addressed to anyone - boyfriends, girlfriends, best friends, relatives, teachers, etc, on the walls of our corridors.

We had a great time reading the different notes, most of them in the shape of a heart.

Xmas is coming!

It smells of Xmas and to celebrate this special season the English Department has prepared some activities to carry out with our students these days. We must thank our new colleagues Mª José, Gema and Cristina, for their ideas and hard work to prepare some of these activities, in particular the Breakout Game and the Advent Calendar.

Students in the 4th year of ESO took part in a Breakoout Game which they really enjoyed. I post some photos of the students as they were trying to complete the different tests and another photo in which the winners were opening the box with their prize.

As some of the members of the department participate in the Library Project, we are also contributing with some activities. The library team have launched a campaign to boost reading habits in our school and community. And the leaders of this campaign are our students: they have been asked to voluntarily make podcasts recommening books or talking about their favourity books and to create posters with slogans promoting books as Christmas gifts.

Here you'll find some examples of the posters created by our students:
